線性思維有時候讓我們不能想到一個可能的未來在等待我們
I was never expecting I could seen a chinese publication called “DianShiZhai Pictorial” 點石齋畫報 during my visit to The British Museum. I didn’t know its existence, I was astounded when the moment I saw their display thought it was so retro-futuristic!!! Because the primary education we took during China was being taught that the Qing Dynasty was isolated and alienated by the modern technology and industrial revolution back then. By seeing this pictorial, got me wondered and amazed that the “future back then” was like a beam leaked thru DianShiZhai allowing Chinese people to able to peek the world, offering them a window of novel events, technologies, real and imagined at home and abroad. The gentleman in this picture was chatting asking me if I can read all. This is about the a steam boat floating on the river with people diving in the water picking up the stuff. And this one is showing Chinese that in Britain, there is an underground railway that training passing the river. I can imagine it was mind blowing to Chinese people back then.

DianShiZhai Pictorial | 點石齋畫報 1884-1898

It is a Chinese language magazine published in Shanghai in late 19th century, it was a supplement to Shen Newpaper 申報 owned by British entrepreneurs Ernest and Frederick Major[1], appearing every 10 days.

This one was picturing the fire rescue in New York. This one picturing the submarine. And of course the balloon.
